Chapter Commemorates 80th Anniversary with NAJA Visit
Several Junior Auxiliary of Columbus board members recently traveled to Greenville, Mississippi, which is home to the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries headquarters, to celebrate a milestone anniversary for the chapter, which has been diligently serving the children of Lowndes County since the organization was officially established in 1943.
In attendance were President Ashli Dunn, Vice President Misty Sharp, Public Relations Chair Jaimie Beckham and Welfare Chair Margaret Rollins.
During their time in Greenville, the board members met with NAJA Executive Director Melanie Livingston, who gave them a tour of the headquarters and showed them the archives of historical documents relating to the Columbus chapter.
“Our Columbus chapter of Junior Auxiliary has such a long, impressive legacy of service,” said Vice President Misty Sharp. “It was a special day to get to see that on display through decades of archived scrapbook material, newspaper articles and organization correspondence at the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries headquarters.”
This year marks the 80th anniversary for Junior Auxiliary of Columbus, which has a rich history that dates to the years prior to the official establishment in 1943.
In the fall of 1942, 36 local women who recognized a great need in Lowndes County, sought to establish a local chapter as part of the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries. The group originally organized in 1940 and was known as the “Reveler’s Club.”
It was the sacrifice of these women, and the hundreds of women who followed in the decades to come, that molded the local chapter into one of the most impactful and highly regarded NAJA chapters in the southern United States.
