Challenge of Champions

Challenge of Champions is a field day held for special education children. This project was developed because the 2018 provisional class felt special needs children were being underserved and often left out of mainstream activities. This project focuses on improving the confidence of the children in special education classes and fostering a bond between these children and children in mainstream classrooms.
Children from the special education classes are paired with a “buddy” from a mainstream classroom to complete field day activities together. These activities include various relay races, bean bag tosses, and hula-hoop games. The games are designed such that each child can complete the activities with his buddy, no matter the developmental delay.
Cheerleaders and representatives from local college athletic programs are on hand to cheer on the participants. At the end of the field day, each child is presented with a medal with his name on it. Challenge of Champions is presented at Caledonia Elementary School each February.
